Long ago, the land of Poland changed its faith. This began with a leader named Mieszko I.

He was the first ruler of the Polish state. In the year 966, Mieszko had a special ceremony. This was his baptism.

During the ceremony, people used water to join the faith. Mieszko and his court joined the Christian religion.

Mieszko's wife, Dobrawa, played a big part in this.

She was a Christian from Bohemia. Many people think she helped Mieszko make his choice. Before this, many tribes lived in Poland. They had their own gods.

Changing the faith was a long and hard task. It took many years for most people to join. Some people even fought against the change in the 1030s. Still, the new faith helped Poland grow. It helped the land join other groups in Europe. It also helped the ruler hold power. By the 1200s, the new faith was the main religion in Poland.
