They were Byzantine Christian missionaries and theologians. Many people call them the "Apostles to the Slavs." They wanted to share their faith with Slavic people. To do this, they had to help them read and write. This work made them very important in history.

The brothers worked in several important steps. First, they had to create a way to write. They devised the Glagolitic alphabet for this task. This was the first alphabet used for Old Church Slavonic. Next, they translated holy books into this language. They worked on the Gospels and the Psalms. They even wrote the first Slavic Civil Code. This code was used for laws in Great Moravia.

The brothers were born in Thessalonica many years ago. This city was part of the Byzantine Empire. Cyril was born between 827 and 828. Methodius was born earlier, between 815 and 820. Their father was named Leo. Their mother was named Maria. Some people believe they were of Slavic descent. Others think they might have been Greek. There is still a debate about their exact origins.

In 862, a big change happened for the brothers. Prince Rastislav of Great Moravia asked for help. He wanted teachers for his Slavic subjects. The Byzantine Emperor Michael III sent the brothers to help. They traveled to Great Moravia to teach. They faced hard jobs along the way. They even had conflicts with German clerics. These clerics did not want a Slavic liturgy.

Today, many people still remember their great work. The Eastern Orthodox Church calls them saints. They use the title "equal-to-apostles." In 1880, Pope Leo XIII added them to the Catholic calendar. Later, in 1980, Pope John Paul II named them co-patron saints of Europe. Many languages still use scripts that came from their work. Their legacy lives on in the way people write today.
