Cosmas of Maiuma was a famous bishop and a gifted poet.

He lived a long time ago in the East. Many people remember him for the beautiful songs he wrote. These songs are called hymns. He is a very important figure in church history. The Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches both honor him as a saint.

Some people even call him a vessel of divine grace.

Cosmas was a master of a special kind of poetry. He wrote many artistic chants known as canons. He worked closely with another man named John of Damascus. Together, they helped develop a musical system called the Octoechos.

This system helped organize how music was used in services. Cosmas wrote several types of canons. He wrote songs for Holy Week and for the Nativity. He is also known for his famous "Canon for Christmas Day." One of his most well-known pieces starts with the words, "More honourable than the cherubim."

His life began in the city of Damascus in modern-day Syria.

Cosmas was an orphan when he was young. A man named Sergius adopted him into his family. This made Cosmas the foster-brother of John of Damascus. An elderly monk named Cosmas also taught the two boys. Later, both men became monks in a monastery near Jerusalem. This monastery was a type of place called a lavra. Cosmas eventually became the Bishop of Maiuma, which was an ancient port city.

History gives us different dates for when Cosmas lived.

Some sources say he was born around the year 675. Other records suggest his life ended around 751 or 773. Some historians even suggest he lived until 794. The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates his feast day on October 12. In the Greek Church, they celebrate him on October 14. These dates follow the Julian Calendar. He lived through a time when people defended the Church against iconoclasm.

Today, the songs of Cosmas are still very important.

His hymns were first made for services in Jerusalem. Because of the influence of Constantinople, they became used everywhere. Many of his works are found in large collections of hymns. Scholars study his writings, which include commentaries on the poems of Gregory of Nazianzus. It is hard to know if every hymn named after him was truly his. This is because his teacher also shared his name. Still, his musical legacy remains a great part of religious tradition.
