She lived in the city of Constantinople a long time ago. Most people who wrote music back then were men. This made Kassia a very rare and special person in history. She is the only known woman whose music is found in the Byzantine liturgy. A liturgy is a formal religious service. Her work includes about fifty hymns and many poems. These writings show she was very intelligent and well-educated. She studied classical Greek literature when she was young.

Kassia wrote many different kinds of sacred music. Her most famous piece is called the Hymn of Kassia. This hymn is also known as the Troparion of Kassiani. It is chanted every year on Great and Holy Wednesday. The music sounds slow, sorrowful, and plaintive. It is a very hard piece for a person to sing alone. Singers must use a very wide range of vocal notes. It can last between ten and twenty minutes to perform. Many singers take great pride in singing it well. Sometimes, a choir will sing it together with a deep bass drone.

Legend says she was part of a bride show for Emperor Theophilos. The Emperor was struck by her beauty and her smart answers. However, he did not choose her to be his wife. Instead, Kassia became the abbess of a convent. An abbess is the leader of a group of nuns. She founded this convent near the walls of Constantinople by the year 843. She was a brave woman who stood up for her religious beliefs.

Kassia did not just write songs for church. She also wrote many secular poems. These poems are called epigrams and gnomic verses. She is credited with writing at least 261 of these works. Epigrams are short poems that can be witty or funny. Her poems talked about many real-life topics. She wrote about friendship, foolishness, and social structures. She even wrote about beauty and the rights of women. These poems were different because they mixed ancient wisdom with religious truths. They were often used to teach lessons to her nuns.

Even today, people still remember and honor Kassia. The Orthodox Church celebrates her feast day on 7 September. She is often shown in art on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. This is because she defended the use of religious icons. Her music is still recorded by many different groups today. Some singers use her music to show her unique style. Her life connects the old world of Greece to the religious traditions of today. She remains a powerful example of a woman's voice in history.
