Sulpicia was a famous poet from ancient Rome. She lived during the time of Emperor Domitian. We do not know every detail of her life. However, she was a very important writer. She is known for her unique style of poetry. Most of her work is lost to time. We only know her through the words of others.

Sulpicia wrote about love and her own feelings. She was very honest about her desire for her husband. This was very unusual for women in ancient Rome. Most female poets did not write this way. She is the only woman from that time linked to comedy. Her poems were often about her marriage. This makes her a very special figure in history.

We learn about her from a poet named Martial. Martial wrote two poems about Sulpicia. He praised her for being a faithful wife. He also mentioned her husband, Calenus. They were likely married for at least 15 years. Some think Sulpicia died between 95 and 98 AD. This would mean she was at least 30 years old.

Only a tiny part of her writing survives today. We have just two lines of her poetry. These lines are called a fragment. A scholar named Pierre Pithou identified them in the 1500s. For a long time, people thought she wrote a long poem called the Conquestio. This poem was about Greek thinkers leaving Rome. Now, experts believe a different person wrote it later.

Sulpicia's name stayed famous for many centuries. Writers like Ausonius and Sidonius Apollinaris mentioned her. She was even grouped with great thinkers like Plato and Cicero. Even though her poems are mostly gone, her legacy remains. She shows us how brave women could be with their words. Her story helps us understand ancient Roman culture.
