She was the oldest of seven children in her family.

Anna was very well educated for her time. She studied many hard subjects with the help of tutors. These subjects included history, philosophy, and mathematics. She also learned about medicine, astronomy, and geography. Anna was very good at medicine. She studied medical texts to help treat people. She even worked with doctors to help her father when he was sick. She was known as an expert on a condition called gout.

In 1097, Anna married a man named Nikephoros Bryennios. He was a soldier and also a historian. Their marriage was likely a political match to help her family's status. They had several children together. Six of their children had names recorded by history. These names were Eirene, Maria, Alexios, John, Andronikos, and Constantine. Anna believed she should have been the leader instead. Some historians say she and her mother tried to take power from John. They may have tried to organize a group to help her husband lead. However, these plans did not work. Her husband, Nikephoros, did not want to join the fight. As a result, Anna was sent to live in the Kecharitomene Monastery.

Anna spent the rest of her life at the monastery until 1153. She used her time there to study and write. She wrote a famous book called the Alexiad. This book tells the story of her father's reign. It is a very important source for learning about Byzantine history. It also helps us understand the early Crusades. Her work shows how much she knew about the world around her.
