When he first became emperor, the empire was in big trouble. It was losing land and facing many different wars. Alexios worked very hard to fix these problems. His success helped the empire grow strong again. This period of recovery is often called the Komnenian restoration.

Alexios took the throne through a clever plan. He was the son of John Komnenos and Anna Dalassene.

His mother, Anna, played a huge part in his rise to power. She used many smart tricks to keep their family safe. She even went to a famous church to make a deal with the old emperor. This helped Alexios and his brother Isaac take control in 1081. After he became leader, he made sure his family stayed in power for a long time.

Being an emperor was a very hard job for Alexios. He had to fight many different groups of people to protect his land. First, he fought the Normans from Southern Italy. These leaders were Robert Guiscard and his son Bohemond.

Alexios even paid 360,000 gold pieces to a German king for help. This alliance helped him drive the Normans away by 1085. Later, he had to fight the Pechenegs in a place called Thrace. He won a big victory at the Battle of Levounion with help from Cuman allies.

One of the biggest challenges Alexios faced was in Asia Minor. The Seljuk Turks had taken much of that land. Alexios wanted help from Western Europe to get it back. In 1095, his messengers asked Pope Urban II for support.

This request helped start the First Crusade. Because of this, much of the land in western Anatolia was returned to the empire. This changed the history of the whole region.

We know a lot about Alexios because of his daughter, Anna Komnene. She was a writer who recorded her father's life in a book. She named this history the Alexiad.
