He took power during a period of intense instability. The empire was facing constant warfare and a general decline. Through his leadership, he began a period of recovery. Historians call this the Komnenian restoration. This era saw the military, financial, and territorial rebuilding of the empire.

His reign also established a hereditary succession for the Komnenos family.

Alexios was the son of John Komnenos and Anna Dalassene. He served under three different Byzantine emperors before becoming ruler. He gained experience fighting rebels in Asia Minor and Thrace. In 1074, he successfully subdued western mercenaries led by Roussel de Bailleul. In 1078, he was appointed commander of the field army in the West. He defeated several rebellions, including those by Nikephoros Bryennios the Elder and Nikephoros Basilakes.

These early military successes prepared him for the challenges of the throne.

Alexios rose to power through a complex political conspiracy. In 1081, the Doukas family convinced him to revolt against Emperor Nikephoros III Botaneiates. His mother, Anna Dalassene, was a central figure in this coup d'état. She used clever tactics to protect the family during the transition. She even entered the Hagia Sophia cathedral to negotiate with the emperor. She successfully convinced Botaneiates to make a public vow to protect her family.

This allowed Alexios and his brother Isaac to enter the capital victoriously on April 1, 1081.

Once in power, Alexios faced immediate threats from the Normans. These invaders were led by Robert Guiscard and his son Bohemond. The Normans took Dyrrhachium and Corfu and besieged Larissa in Thessaly. Alexios suffered several early defeats against them. To counter this, he formed an alliance with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV. Alexios paid 360,000 gold pieces to secure this German support. This forced the Normans to defend their own lands in Italy. By 1085, the Norman threat subsided and the Byzantines recovered most lost territory.

Next, Alexios had to manage internal revolts and the Pecheneg threat. In Thrace, groups like the Bogomils and Paulicians revolted. These groups joined forces with the Pechenegs, who came from beyond the Danube. In 1087, the Pechenegs raided Thrace, and Alexios was even forced to sign a truce. However, he later achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Levounion in 1091. He won this battle with the assistance of Cuman allies. This victory helped stabilize the empire's northern borders.

In the 1090s, Alexios focused on reclaiming land in Asia Minor. Most of this region had been taken by the Seljuk Turks. Alexios sought military help from Western Europe to fight the Turks. In 1095, his envoys made a formal appeal to Pope Urban II at the Council of Piacenza. This appeal acted as a catalyst for the First Crusade.

Following the Pope's call at the Council of Clermont, the Crusade began. This movement eventually helped restore much of western Anatolia to Byzantine rule.

We know much about this era through the writings of Anna Komnene. She was the daughter of Alexios and a skilled historian. She wrote a political and military history called the *Alexiad*. This work was named in honor of her father.
