Seljuk dynasty

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Seljuk dynasty was a group of Turkic people who changed the history of West and Central Asia. They were Sunni Muslims from the Oghuz Turkic group. These people created a famous culture known as Turco-Persian culture. This happened because they mixed their own traditions with the ways of Persia. They ruled over several large areas for many years. Their influence helped shape the art and language of the lands they governed.

The Seljuk story began with a leader named Seljuk Beg. He was a descendant of a royal chief named Tuqaq. Long ago, the Seljuks lived in the Kazakh Steppe. They lived north of the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea. Around the year 985, Seljuk converted to the religion of Islam. Later, the group moved into the province of Khurasan in Persia. They met another group there called the Ghaznavids.

As time passed, the Seljuk family grew much stronger. Seljuk's grandsons were named Tughril and Chaghri. They fought the Ghaznavids at the Battle of Nasa in 1035. They also won at the Battle of Dandanaqan. After Tughril captured the city of Isfahan in 1050 or 1051, the Great Seljuk Empire was formed. This empire was huge and stretched from Iran to Anatolia. The family also ruled other areas like the Sultanate of Kerman and the Sultanate of Rum.

The Seljuks did not have a large written culture of their own. Because of this, they learned from Persian scholars and poets. They used the Persian language to run their government. They even took Persian names like Qubad and Kay Khusraw. This helped them protect the Iranian people from other groups. Many people felt safer under Seljuk rule because it brought stability. They became great supporters of Persian art and literature.

Many beautiful things were built during the time of the Seljuks. They built tall towers to honor their leaders and princes. One famous monument is the Toghrol Tower in the south of Tehran. They also built the Kharaghan twin towers in 1053. These towers were used to hold the remains of Seljuk princes. The dynasty lasted for a long time until the Khwarazmian dynasty took over. Even after they stopped ruling, their love for Persian culture stayed strong.
