Kilij Arslan I was a powerful sultan of Rûm. He ruled from 1092 until 1107. His name means "Sword Lion." He was a leader of the Turkish Oghuz Yiva tribe. He was the first Muslim and Turkish commander to fight the Crusaders. These were groups of soldiers coming from far away.

His path to power began with a hard time. After his father died in 1086, he became a hostage. He stayed in Isfahan until the death of Sultan Malik Shah I in 1092. Then, Kilij Arslan marched to lead his own people. He set up his capital at Nicaea. He replaced a governor there to start his reign. He even married Ayşe Hatun to help make allies. They had four sons named Malik Shah, Mesud I, Arab, and Toghrul.

In 1096, a group called the People's Crusade arrived. They tried to take a fort called Xerigordon. Kilij Arslan sent spies to trick these travelers. He sent a force to starve them out at the fort. Later, his army met them near the village of Civetot. This was a very large and difficult fight. Many people lost their lives during this time.

A much larger group of Crusaders arrived in 1097. They surrounded Nicaea and defeated Kilij Arslan in May. The city surrendered to the Byzantines. The Crusaders also captured his wife and children. His wife was sent to Constantinople. However, she was returned to him later without a ransom.

Kilij Arslan fought back using hit-and-run tactics. He tried to stop them by destroying crops and water.

Kilij Arslan found success in later battles. In 1101, he defeated a Crusader army at Heraclea Cybistra. This victory proved that the knights were not invincible. He then moved his capital to Konya. In 1107, he fought a battle at the Khabur River. He lost the battle and drowned while trying to cross the water. In 2021, archaeologists found his grave in Silvan. They found it two metres deep in a park.
