The Byzantine-Seljuk wars were a long series of fights in the Middle Ages. These wars happened between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Sultanate. They changed who held power in places like Asia Minor and Syria.

The Seljuk Turks came from the steppes of Central Asia. They were excellent riders and had a strong religious zeal. They used many of the same tactics that the Huns used long ago. These wars shifted control from the Byzantines to the Seljuk dynasty.

Many things made the Byzantine Empire weak before the wars grew large. After the death of Emperor Basil II, the empire faced many crises. There were fights over who should lead the empire. Wealthy landowners also took land away from free peasants. This meant there were fewer people to serve in the army.

The empire also had to rely on mercenaries. These hired soldiers were often unreliable and caused trouble. Internal rivalries between leaders made it hard to defend the borders.

One of the most important moments was the Battle of Manzikert. This battle took place on August 26, 1071. The Seljuk leader was a man named Alp Arslan.

He led his army against the Byzantine Emperor, Romanus Diogenes. Alp Arslan used a clever trick during the fight. He withdrew his troops to lure the Byzantines into an ambush.

The Seljuks won this decisive victory. This event opened up Anatolia for many Turkish settlers to move in.

Even after Manzikert, the fighting did not stop immediately. The Byzantines and Seljuks continued to struggle for many years.

Some Byzantine leaders even hired Turks to help defend their cities. This caused more confusion and lost territory. Alexius I Komnenos became emperor in 1081 and tried to fix things. He made reforms to help the empire survive. However, many important cities like Antioch and Smyrna were still lost.

These wars changed the whole world in many ways. The Seljuks also attacked the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt. They even captured the city of Jerusalem.

This event helped lead to the First Crusade. The Byzantines eventually fought back and took some lands near the sea.

Later, the empire faced even more trouble during the Fourth Crusade. Eventually, the rise of the Mongols changed the Seljuk lands too. This led to new wars between the Byzantines and the Ottomans.
