Aq Qoyunlu

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Aq Qoyunlu were a large group of people known as the White Sheep Turkomans. Their name likely came from the white sheep painted on their flags. Some people think the name refers to the color of their sheep flocks. They were part of the Oghuz tribes, which were groups of people who moved with their animals.

These people lived in parts of modern-day Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. They also had influence near the Persian Gulf. Their history shows how tribal groups can grow into large states. They even used a special symbol called a tamga on their coins and flags.

This group started as a collection of moving tribes in the Diyarbakir region. A leader named Qara Yuluk Uthman Beg is credited with founding their principality. In the mid-1300s, these tribes moved between summer and winter pastures. They spent summers in Armenia near the Tigris river. They spent winters between the towns of Diyarbakir and Sivas.

For a long time, they fought with a rival group called the Black Sheep Turkomans. This constant fighting made it hard for them to grow their land. They had to work very hard to protect their territory from these rivals.

Everything changed when a powerful leader named Uzun Hasan took control. He ruled from 1452 to 1478 and led the empire to its greatest height. He won a big battle against the Black Sheep leader in 1467. This victory allowed him to take over much more land. He ruled over parts of Iran, Iraq, and even Baghdad.

Uzun Hasan was very important to his people. He even had a special title that meant he was a great leader. He also helped build beautiful things, like parts of the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan.

Life in the empire was a mix of different cultures. As the group grew into Iran, they began to use Persian ways of governing. They used a system of government that included many different kinds of people. Even Christian residents could take part in the economy and social life.

The leaders also had to deal with powerful neighbors like the Ottoman Empire. Uzun Hasan even asked Venice for help during a war with the Ottomans. However, that help never arrived, and he lost a battle in 1473. This showed how hard it was to rule such a large area.

After Uzun Hasan died in 1478, the empire began to struggle. His son Khalil Mirza ruled for only a few months. Then, a leader named Ya'qub ruled from 1478 to 1490. During this time, many people fought to become the new leader.

These fights turned into a civil war that hurt the empire from the inside. At the same time, a new group called the Safavids began to rise. In 1501, the Safavids won a major battle in the city of Nakhchivan. This event marked the end of the White Sheep rule.
