Aq Qoyunlu

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Aq Qoyunlu were a powerful Turkoman tribal confederation. Their name literally means "those with white sheep." Historians believe this name came from the white sheep painted on their flags. It might also refer to the color of their animal flocks. They were part of the Oghuz tribes. These were groups of people who moved with their animals. They eventually built a large state that covered many different lands.

The confederation began as loosely organized bands of pastoral nomadic raiders. They started in the Diyarbakir region of eastern Anatolia. Qara Yuluk Uthman Beg is credited as the founder of this principality. In the mid-14th century, these tribes moved between seasonal pastures. They used the upper reaches of the Tigris river in Armenia for summer grazing. They moved to the area between Diyarbakir and Sivas for the winter. This lifestyle was based on moving animals to find food.

For many years, the Aq Qoyunlu faced a major rival. This rival group was the Qara Qoyunlu, or the Black Sheep Turkomans. The two groups fought constant wars to control the same regions. This conflict kept the Aq Qoyunlu from expanding their territory for a long time. The leading tribe within the Aq Qoyunlu was the Bayandur tribe. The leaders used the Bayandur tamga, or official seal, on their coins and flags.

The empire reached its highest point under the ruler Uzun Hasan. He ruled from 1452 to 1478. Uzun Hasan changed the fate of the confederation through military victory. In 1467, he defeated the Black Sheep leader, Jahan Shah, at the Battle of Chapakchur. This victory allowed the Aq Qoyunlu to expand into much larger territories. They eventually controlled parts of modern-day Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Iraq. They even held influence as far as Oman.

As the empire moved into Iran, its culture began to change. The Aq Qoyunlu became increasingly Persianate. This means they adopted many Persian ways of life and government. They used a bureaucratic apparatus, which is a system of officials, based on the Iranian-Islamic model. This system allowed for a complex way to run a large state. Even Christian inhabitants could participate in the economy and social activities. This helped the state function across many different types of people.

Uzun Hasan also had to manage difficult relationships with powerful neighbors. The Ottoman Empire was a major threat to his eastern expansion. In 1464, Uzun Hasan asked Venice for military aid to help against the Ottomans. Despite promises, the Venetian aid never arrived. This led to a major defeat for the Aq Qoyunlu at the Battle of Otlukbeli in 1473. Despite this loss, the empire did not fall immediately. It continued to struggle with internal and external pressures for several decades.

After Uzun Hasan died in 1478, the dynasty entered a period of instability. His son Khalil Mirza ruled for only a few months. Then, Sultan Ya'qub ruled from 1478 to 1490. During Ya'qub's reign, seven different people tried to take the throne. The empire also faced religious shifts. Many Turks began to join the Safaviyya order. This group eventually became a militant organization. Internal civil wars began to destroy the Aq Qoyunlu from within.

The end of the Aq Qoyunlu came through conflict with the Safavids. In 1501, the Safavid leader Ismail I met the Aq Qoyunlu in battle at Nakhchivan. The Safavids won and forced the Aq Qoyunlu to withdraw. The last leader, Sultan Murad, briefly held Baghdad in 1501. However, he soon had to retreat back to Diyarbakir. This retreat signaled the final end of the Aq Qoyunlu rule. Their empire was replaced by the rising Safavid power.
