The empire was a mix of different cultures. It blended Turkic, Mongol, and Persian ways together. This mix made the empire very unique. People often called it a Perso-Islamic state.

Timur wanted to be like the great Genghis Khan. However, he was not a direct descendant of Genghis Khan. To help his rule seem official, he used a special title. This title was Gurkani, which means "son-in-law." He married a princess from the family of Genghis Khan to show this link.

Timur was a very active leader who moved across many lands. He took control of Samarkand in 1366. He also took Balkh in 1369.

He led armies into many different places. He fought the Golden Horde and went into India. In 1398, his army reached the area near Delhi. He even fought the Ottoman Empire in 1402. Timur made Samarkand a very important capital city for his people.

After Timur died in 1405, the empire began to change. His sons and grandsons fought with each other. These fights were called civil wars.

Because of these wars, the empire grew weak. Other groups began to take the land. For example, the Aq Qoyunlu took parts of Iran. By 1500, the empire had lost most of its territory. It was being pushed back on many sides.

Even during hard times, the empire had a special time of learning. This is called the Timurid Renaissance. It happened in cities like Samarkand and Herat.

One famous leader was Ulugh Beg. He was a great mathematician and astronomer. He studied the stars and math very closely. The empire also had strong trade with Ming China. Diplomats traveled long paths to visit Samarkand. This helped spread new ideas and goods. Later, a prince named Babur used his Timurid roots to start the Mughal Empire in India.
