Her name means "life" in Greek. She was born in 978 into the Macedonian dynasty. This was a very important family that ruled the empire. Because she was born in the capital to a reigning emperor, she was called "Porphyrogenita." This means she was "born into the purple."

For many years, Zoe lived a quiet life. Her uncle, Basil II, kept her and her sister away from politics. He did not want husbands to take power from the family. Zoe lived in the women's quarters of the palace for a long time. She was even almost married to an emperor in Italy. But that emperor died before they could marry. This forced her to return home to Constantinople.

Zoe's life changed when her father, Constantine VIII, became the sole emperor. He had no sons to take his place. This meant his daughters could lead the empire. In 1028, Zoe married a man named Romanos Argyros. They became rulers together the very next day.

Their marriage was not a happy one. Zoe wanted to have children to keep her family line going. She tried many things, but she could not become pregnant. This caused problems between her and Romanos. Eventually, Romanos died in his bath in 1034. People had many different ideas about how he died. Some thought Zoe or her lover Michael were involved.

After Romanos died, Zoe married Michael.

He became the new emperor, Michael IV. He was not very good at ruling by himself. He let his brother help with the work of the empire. Later, Michael IV's nephew, Michael V, took power. Michael V was not kind to Zoe. He sent her away to a monastery on the island of Principus.

This made the people of the city very angry. They wanted their empress to come home. A large group of people started a revolt to stop Michael V.

The people successfully removed Michael V from power. They brought Zoe and her sister, Theodora, back to the capital. The two sisters became joint empresses in 1042.

Even though they ruled together, they did not always get along. Zoe was the senior empress and sat in front during meetings. However, Theodora was often the one who made the big decisions. They worked to make the government more fair. They also tried to stop people from buying public jobs. The sisters had to work hard to manage the empire together.

Zoe eventually decided to marry a third time. She married Constantine IX in 1042.

Even after her marriage, she remained a powerful leader. She was still the heir to the Macedonian dynasty. During her years of ruling, the empire faced some hard times. The Roman army began to grow weaker. Also, groups called the Turks began to move into eastern Anatolia.
