He was the son of Cnut the Great. Cnut was a very powerful leader. He ruled over Denmark, Norway, and England. This group of lands was called the North Sea Empire. Harthacnut was the last person to rule this large empire. He was also the last king from his family, the House of Knýtlinga.

Harthacnut became the King of Denmark in 1035. At first, he could not rule England. His half-brother, Harold Harefoot, ruled England instead. Harthacnut stayed in Denmark for many years. In 1039, he sailed ten ships to find his mother, Emma. She lived in Bruges, which is in Flanders. After Harold died in March 1040, people offered the English throne to Harthacnut. He arrived in England in June 1040. He landed at Sandwich with a huge fleet of 62 warships.

Being a king brought many hard jobs. Harthacnut needed money to pay for his large navy. He collected a tax called a geld. This tax was over 21,000 pounds. This was a very large amount of money. Because of this, many people became unhappy with him. In 1041, people in Worcester even fought against tax collectors. Harthacnut responded by ordering his leaders to burn the town. This was a very difficult and sad time for the people.

Harthacnut also had trouble with his leaders. He liked to make all the rules himself. This style of ruling is called autocratic rule. He did not always trust the important earls. One earl, Eadwulf of Bamburgh, ruled the north. Harthacnut did not like this. In 1041, Harthacnut helped a man named Siward kill Eadwulf. Many people thought this was a betrayal. They called the king an oath-breaker because he had promised safety.
