Edward the Martyr was a King of the English. He ruled from July 975 until his death in March 978.

Edward was the eldest son of King Edgar. His father had been a very strong ruler. Edgar supported a group called the Benedictine reformers. These reformers wanted to help monasteries grow. King Edgar helped them by taking land from nobles. He made them sell land to the monasteries at low prices. This caused many people to feel unhappy with his rule.

When King Edgar died, a big argument started. This was a dispute over who should be the next king. Edward's supporters and the supporters of his half-brother fought for power. Edward was about thirteen years old at the time. His brother, Æthelred, was much younger. They were both children, so they did not lead the fight. Instead, powerful adults made the choices.

The fight was about family alliances and land. It did not turn into a war.

Different leaders backed different children. Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury, supported Edward. Another leader named Æthelwine also helped Edward. On the other side, Queen Ælfthryth backed her son, Æthelred. She worked with a man named Æthelwold to help her son. The dispute was settled quickly. Edward was chosen to be the king. Æthelred was given lands to make up for not being king. This was the tradition for the king's eldest son.

Edward's reign was very short. In March 978, he was killed at the Gap of Corfe in Dorset.

He was buried at Wareham. A year later, his body was moved to Shaftesbury Abbey. No one knows for sure who killed him. Some old stories blame his step-mother, Ælfthryth. Other stories say men working for Æthelred were responsible. Many people in those days thought the murder was a great sin. This was because kings were seen as sacred.

Because of his death, Edward became a saint. People began to honor him for his life. Even though he was known to be sometimes angry, he was still revered. His feast day is on 18 March. This date is in the Book of Common Prayer.
