He became king on May 26, 946. He ruled until he died in 955. Eadred was the younger son of Edward the Elder. His mother was named Eadgifu. He took the throne after his brother, Edmund I, died. Edmund's sons were only young children at that time. This meant Eadred had to lead the kingdom. He ruled for about nine years in total.

Being a king was a very hard job for Eadred. He had to manage many different groups of people. Some leaders in the north wanted their own kings. These leaders often chose Viking kings to rule them. Eadred had to fight to keep his land together. He sometimes used his army to show his power. He once burned a church in Ripon to punish leaders. This was done because they broke their promises to him.

Eadred was not alone in his work. He had many wise people to help him. He kept the same advisers that his brother Edmund used. One important adviser was Oda, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Another powerful man was Æthelstan, the ealdorman of East Anglia. A very close friend was a man named Dunstan. Dunstan was an Abbot at Glastonbury. When Eadred became too ill to attend meetings, Dunstan helped. He even helped draft important papers for the king.

History shows that the north was a changing place. In 954, the leaders in York removed their last Viking king. This king was named Erik Bloodaxe. After Erik was gone, the people chose English rule. This was a permanent change for the land. Eadred then appointed Osulf as the first ealdorman of Northumbria. Osulf was an Anglo-Saxon ruler from Bamburgh. This helped bring the whole area under one rule.

Eadred's life ended when he was in his early thirties. He never married during his time as king. He died in the year 955. In his will, he left 1600 pounds of money. He wanted this money to help his people. He hoped it would stop hunger from famine. He also hoped it could buy peace from armies.
