He ruled from the year 946 until 955. Eadred became king after his brother, Edmund, died. Edmund was killed while trying to protect a friend. Because Edmund's sons were very young, Eadred took the throne.

Eadred had a hard job. Many people in the north wanted Viking kings. One Viking leader was named Erik Bloodaxe. Eadred fought to keep his land. He even burned a church to punish leaders who broke their promises. Later, the people in the north chose to follow English rule. This change stayed for a long time.

Eadred had many wise advisers. One close friend was Dunstan. Dunstan helped the king write papers when Eadred was sick. Eadred also supported new ways for monks to live.

Eadred died in his early thirties. He never married. In his will, he left 1600 pounds. He wanted this money to help his people. He hoped it would protect them from hunger or war.
