Eadwig's time as king was difficult. He had many powerful leaders around him. He had a disagreement with a leader named Dunstan. Dunstan was the Abbot of Glastonbury. Because of this fight, Dunstan had to leave the country. Some people said Eadwig did not like monasteries. These are places where monks live and pray. Most historians think this story might not be true.

In 957, the land was split in two. Eadwig kept the land south of the Thames river. His brother, Edgar, ruled the land to the north. This happened during a time of great change. Eadwig also married a woman named Ælfgifu. Later, a leader named Oda said they could not be married. They were too closely related. Eadwig died in 959. He was only twenty years old. After he died, Edgar became the king of all England.
