Being king was a hard job. After his brother Æthelstan died, Viking leaders tried to take land. A leader named Anlaf took control of York. He also took five towns in Mercia. This was a big setback for Edmund. But Anlaf died in 941. Edmund then won back the five towns. In 944, he drove the Viking kings out of York. This meant he ruled all of England again.

Edmund also helped the church. He gave important jobs to religious leaders. He helped start a movement to improve monasteries. This was a new way for monks to live.
