Long ago, a leader named Cunedda moved to the area. He and his sons brought order to the land. They helped protect the people from raids. After Cunedda died, his sons ruled different parts. This helped the kingdom grow.

For many years, the rulers of Gwynedd were very strong. Some were called the "King of the Britons." They held power for a long time. However, they sometimes lost power to wars or invaders.

One king was Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. He ruled from 1055 to 1063. A Saxon invasion broke his kingdom apart in 1063. Later, a ruling family called the House of Aberffraw helped the land recover. In 1216, Llywelyn the Great made a big claim. He called his land the Principality of Wales. Eventually, Edward I of England took control. A treaty in 1277 meant Welsh self-rule would end. This marked a major change for the kingdom.
