The Kingdom of Gwynedd was a strong land in northwest Wales.

It first appeared around the turn of the sixth century. The kingdom was located in a beautiful area with mountains and coasts. Much of the land was in the snowy mountains of Snowdonia.

It also included the island of Anglesey. The name might come from old Irish words. Some think it means "forest people" or even "war band." This shows how different groups of people lived there long ago.

Early life in this region started a very long time ago. People lived there even after the last ice age ended. Archaeologists found old tools made of flint near Llanfaethlu.

They also found a bronze cauldron from 1100 BC. This object is called the Arthog cauldron. Another find was a shield that is 3,000 years old.

These items show that many people built homes and tools there. They lived in roundhouses and hillforts for many centuries.

Tradition says a leader named Cunedda helped found the kingdom.

He and his sons moved to North Wales in the mid-5th century. They came from a place called Manaw Gododdin. They wanted to protect the land from raiders. Cunedda brought order to the area after the Romans left. When he died, his sons divided the land among themselves. One son, Dynod, received Dunoding. Another son, Ceredig, was given Ceredigion.

This helped the kingdom grow and stay strong.

Many kings ruled Gwynedd over the years. Some were even called the "King of the Britons." One ruler was Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. He was the King of Wales from 1055 to 1063. A Saxon invasion broke his kingdom apart in 1063. Later, the House of Aberffraw helped the land recover.

In 1216, Llywelyn the Great proclaimed the Principality of Wales. This happened at a big gathering of princes in Aberdyfi. He was a very important leader for the Welsh people.

Eventually, things changed for the kingdom. In 1277, a treaty was signed between Edward I and Llywelyn's grandson.

This treaty was called the Treaty of Aberconwy. It brought peace, but it also meant Welsh self-rule would end. This was a major step in the conquest of Wales by Edward I.

Even though the kingdom changed, its history is still famous. Famous families like the Tudors came from this part of Wales. The Tudors even became the royal family of England.
