Edward was a king of the English. He became king in July 975. His father was King Edgar. When Edgar died, people argued about the throne.

Two groups fought for power. One group liked Edward. They were led by Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The other group liked Edward's half-brother, Æthelred. They were led by Queen Ælfthryth. This fight was about family ties. It was not a war. Edward was chosen to be king.

Edward did not rule for long. In March 978, he was killed. This happened at a place called the Gap of Corfe.

People do not know who killed him. Some say his step-mother, Ælfthryth, was to blame. Others think men working for Æthelred did it. His death was a big shock. Many people thought it was a great sin. Because of this, Edward was seen as a saint. People still remember him in the Church of England.
