He was the son of the famous King Alfred the Great. Edward was born sometime in the 870s. His name means "protector of wealth." He grew up in a royal court with many tutors.

These teachers taught him about poems and religious books. They also taught him to be gentle and humble. This special training helped prepare him to be a leader one day.

Becoming king was not a simple job for Edward. When his father died in 899, Edward took the throne. However, his cousin Æthelwold also wanted to be king. Æthelwold had a strong claim to the crown. He even took over important royal lands in Dorset.

Edward had to lead his army to deal with this challenge. Eventually, Æthelwold left to find support in the north. Edward was officially crowned at Kingston upon Thames in 900.

Edward spent much of his rule fighting the Vikings. The Vikings had taken control of many English lands. These lands included Northumbria, East Anglia, and parts of Mercia. Edward did not fight these battles alone. He worked closely with his sister, Æthelflæd.

She was the Lady of the Mercians. Together, they won many victories against the Viking armies. Their teamwork helped take back control of southern England.

By the end of the 910s, Edward ruled many areas. He controlled Wessex, Mercia, and East Anglia. He even took direct rule over Mercia in 918. This happened after the death of his sister.

Only Northumbria remained under Viking rule during this time. Edward faced one last revolt in 924 at Chester. After he stopped the revolt, he died at Farndon in Cheshire. He passed away on 17 July 924.

Edward's life helped change the map of England forever. He helped break the power of the Vikings in the south. Many historians believe he helped build a united English kingdom. His eldest son, Æthelstan, became the next king.
