People often call him Æthelred the Unready. This name is actually a funny play on words in Old English. His name meant "noble counsel." However, his nickname meant "bad counsel." This suggested he did not make good choices. He was born between the years 966 and 969. His father was King Edgar, and his mother was Queen Ælfthryth. He became king when he was only nine to twelve years old.

His path to the throne was a difficult one. Before he became king, his older half-brother Edward was killed. This event shocked everyone in the country. Because Æthelred was so young, no one thought he was involved. While he was a child, his mother and other leaders helped run the country. When he grew up in the mid-980s, he chose new advisers. Some of these advisers took land from the church. By the 990s, the king felt regret about these choices. He began to see Viking attacks as a punishment from God.

Life in England was very hard due to Viking raids. For a long time, the English did not win many battles. To stop the fighting, the king gave money to the Vikings. This money was called tribute.

In 1002, Æthelred ordered a massacre of Danes on St Brice's Day. This showed he was becoming very worried and suspicious. Later, a powerful adviser named Eadric Streona rose to power in 1009. The Viking attacks grew much worse as time went on.

War and change continued through the end of his life. In December 1013, King Swein Forkbeard of Denmark conquered England. Æthelred had to flee to a place called Normandy. He returned to the throne in February 1014 after Swein died. However, a civil war broke out in early 1015. His son, Edmund Ironside, fought against the leaders of the war. The king's health was poor during this difficult time.

Sadly, Æthelred died in April 1016. After he died, his son Edmund kept fighting, but Cnut eventually became king.

Historians have changed how they think about Æthelred over time. For a long time, many thought he was a bad king. They focused on the many problems that happened during his rule. But in the late twentieth century, people began to look closer. They saw that the 990s and early 1000s were actually successful years. During this time, England had great achievements in literature.
