Swein became king by taking the throne from his own father. His father was named Harald Bluetooth. In the mid-980s, Swein led a revolt against him. This caused Harald to leave his land and die shortly after. Some stories say Swein was even sent away for many years. However, other facts show he was building churches in Denmark during that time. He used his power to grow his influence across the north.

Swein also worked to win control of Norway. He made an alliance with the Swedish king, Olof Skötkonung. They fought against the Norwegian king, Olaf Tryggvason. This big fight happened at sea in the Battle of Svolder. The battle took place around the year 999 or 1000. After the fight, the winners divided the land of Norway. Swein gained direct control over a part called the Viken district.

One of Swein's biggest jobs was leading raids against England. He led many trips to England between 1002 and 1012. Some say he did this because Danes were treated unfairly in England. Others think he wanted to collect large amounts of money. In 1013, he led a huge fleet to the English coast. He moved quickly through places like East Anglia and Oxford. Many people and towns bowed to him to show they followed him.
