Otto was almost 24 years old when he started ruling. He became the Duke of Saxony and the King of Germany.

Otto worked hard to make his kingdom much stronger. He wanted all the German tribes to be one single group. To do this, he gave important jobs to his own family members. He put them in charge of the most important areas, called duchies. This meant the other local leaders had to obey him.

He also worked very closely with the church. By controlling the church leaders, he made his own power even greater.

There were many hard times and fights during his rule. Some local leaders did not want to follow his orders. His own brother, Henry, even tried to take the throne. Otto also had to fight against people called the Magyars. In 955, he won a huge victory at the Battle of Lechfeld.

This big win stopped invasions into Western Europe. It made many people see him as a great protector.

Otto grew his land to become much larger. By 961, he had conquered the Kingdom of Italy. In 962, Pope John XII crowned him in Rome. This made him the Holy Roman Emperor.

He even tried to work with the Byzantine Empire. He sent his son, Otto II, to marry a Byzantine princess named Theophanu. This was a way to help make peace between the two lands.

His time as a leader changed how people made art. This period is often called the Ottonian Renaissance.
