Henry the Fowler was a very important leader in Europe. He was the Duke of Saxony starting in 912. Later, he became the King of East Francia in 919. This land would eventually become the country we know as Germany.

Henry was the first king who was not a Frank. This changed how people saw the power of the throne. He started a famous family line called the Ottonian dynasty. He is often called the founder of the medieval German state.

Henry earned a very special nickname during his life. People called him "the Fowler." This name comes from a story about how he became king. Legend says he was fixing his birding nets when messengers arrived. They told him that he was to be the new king.

He did not want to be a king who ruled alone. Instead, he ruled through different local groups called stem duchies. He worked with these leaders rather than trying to control every small thing. This helped keep the different parts of his land together.

Being a king was a very hard job for Henry. He had to deal with many different types of fights. Some leaders in places like Bavaria and Swabia did not want to follow him. Henry had to lead military campaigns to make them obey.

He also had to fight to gain more land. In 925, he gained control of a place called Lotharingia. He did this through war and through a clever marriage. His daughter Gerberga married a leader in that land to help keep the peace. This helped make his kingdom much larger.

One of the biggest dangers to Henry was a group called the Magyars. These people performed raids on his lands for many years. In 919, Henry actually lost a battle against them at Püchen. He had to pay them money to keep the peace for a while.

Henry used this time to prepare his defenses. He built many strong, fortified towns across the land. He also trained a special group of heavy cavalry on horses. In 933, his army won a great victory at the Battle of Riade. This victory stopped the Magyar raids for 21 years.

Henry also expanded his reach toward the east and the north. He fought against Slavic tribes near the Elbe river. In 929, his forces won a big battle at Lenzen.

He also gained influence over the Danes and the Duchy of Bohemia. Henry died on July 2, 936, before he could become an emperor. He left a much stronger kingdom for his son, Otto I. His wife, Matilda, built Quedlinburg Abbey to honor him. Henry is buried there today in that holy place.
