Henry worked hard to make his kingdom strong. He faced many threats from outside groups. The Magyars were a group that raided his lands. Henry built strong towns to defend them. He also trained a powerful army of horse riders. In 933, his army won a big battle at Riade. This stopped the Magyar raids for many years.

Henry also won many battles to grow his land. He fought the Slavs and the Danes. He even brought the land of Lotharingia back into his kingdom. He did not rule as a single boss. Instead, he worked with other local leaders. He left a much stronger kingdom for his son, Otto I. His wife Matilda helped him by building a holy place called Quedlinburg Abbey. Henry is buried there.
