This happened in the year 843. A treaty called the Treaty of Verdun was signed. One son, Louis the German, received the eastern lands. This area became known as East Francia.

Most people in East Francia spoke German. They belonged to many different tribes. These tribes lived in places like Saxony and Bavaria. Because of these people, the land later became the Kingdom of Germany.

The kings of East Francia had to make new rules. They did not have the old crown jewels. They had to make their own rituals for kings. One important part was a ceremony called Recognition. During this, the people would shout to show support.

In 911, the ruling family changed. The nobles chose a new king named Conrad I. Later, a leader named Henry I was elected. He worked hard to make the kingdom strong. His son, Otto the Great, became a very famous leader. He even became an Emperor in the year 962.
