Metz was a main city and a capital for the kings.

A king named Clovis I started the Frankish rule. After he died, his sons split the land. One son, Theuderic I, got the lands for Austrasia. For a long time, Austrasia was a separate kingdom. It often fought with a neighbor called Neustria.

New leaders called mayors of the palace began to help. They worked between the king and the people. One family, the Pippinids, became very strong. They eventually took the throne from the old kings. Another family, the Carolingians, also held power here.

In the year 843, a treaty divided the land into three parts. The middle part was called Lotharingia. The eastern parts later became known as Franconia. This land covers parts of many countries today, like Germany and France.
