This happened in the year 843. A treaty was signed at a place called Verdun. The youngest son, Charles the Bald, got the western part. This new land was called West Francia.

Charles was a busy king. He even became the Emperor of Rome in 875. Later, a king named Charles the Fat ruled all of Francia. This was the only time the lands were joined again. But his rule did not last long.

Over time, the kings lost much of their power. Local lords and dukes became very strong. They ruled their own areas. Some even made their own money.

In the north, Vikings also came to the land. The kings could not stop them. Instead, local nobles had to fight the invaders.

By the year 987, the old ruling families were gone. The nobles chose a new leader named Hugh Capet. This started a new ruling family. West Francia was now changing into the Kingdom of France.
