Neustria

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Neustria was a land in the west. It was part of the Frankish Kingdom. The name likely means "new western land."

At first, Neustria was quite large. It included cities like Paris and Orléans. Many kings ruled this area. They often fought with the eastern land called Austrasia. Sometimes the two lands joined together. Other times they split apart.

Later, Neustria became a smaller region. It sat between the Seine and Loire rivers. The Carolingian kings used it as a subkingdom. This means it was a smaller part of a bigger empire. The kings in Neustria had a big job. They had to defend the land. They watched for the Bretons and the Vikings.

To help protect the borders, kings made a March of Neustria. A march is a land on the edge of a kingdom. Officials called wardens ruled these areas. Eventually, new leaders took over. The Capetian family began to rule. By the late 10th century, the name Neustria was no longer used for a country.
