March of Tuscany

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The March of Tuscany was a group of lands in Italy. It sat in the middle of the country. Many different families ruled this area for a long time.

At first, the Boniface family held power. They were counts from a place called Lucca. Later, a king named Hugh of Arles took the land. He gave it to his brother, Boso. This started a new family of rulers.

In the year 1027, a new group took over. These were the counts of Canossa. One famous leader was Matilda. She was a very powerful woman. She held much of the land. She also helped the Pope, the leader of the church.

Things changed after Matilda died in 1115. The big lords lost their power. Instead, many city-states began to rule. These were independent cities that ran themselves. Cities like Florence, Pisa, and Siena grew strong. Florence became the most powerful city in the area. By the 1500s, it ruled many of the other cities. This marked a big change from the old days of lords and kings.
