They supported artists like Peter Paul Rubens. They also helped develop opera. A famous musician named Claudio Monteverdi lived there. He wrote music that was first performed in Mantua.

The family helped build many things. They built new walls and gates for the city. They even started a university in 1625. This school taught subjects like law and medicine. But being a great ruler cost a lot of money. To pay for their fancy life, the family had to sell art. In 1627, they sold many famous paintings to the King of England. Eventually, the Gonzaga family line ended. In 1708, the land was split up. The House of Habsburg took the city of Mantua. The House of Savoy took part of Montferrat. Mantua changed hands many times after that.
