Some old stories say they were once called the Winnili. These stories say they got a new name because of their hair. The name Lombard might mean "long beards."

For many years, the Lombards moved to new places. They first moved to the Danube river area.

There, they fought other groups to find a home. Later, they moved into Italy. They arrived when much of the land was empty. They took control of northern and central Italy.

A king named Liutprand ruled during a great time for them.

But their kingdom did not last forever. In the year 774, a Frankish king named Charlemagne conquered them. He made their land part of his own empire. Even so, the Lombards left a big mark. A place in northern Italy is still called Lombardy today. This name comes from them.
