The Lombards, also known as Longobards or Langobards, were a Germanic people. They are famous for conquering most of the Italian Peninsula between 568 and 774 AD.

This conquest fundamentally changed the political landscape of the Mediterranean world. Their presence left a lasting mark on the geography of Europe. Today, the northern Italian region of Lombardy still carries their name. Understanding the Lombards requires looking at their long migrations and their complex tribal identities.

The history of the Lombards begins far to the north of Italy.

Roman-era historians recorded them as early as the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. They were originally part of the Suebian peoples. Early records place them near the Lower Elbe river in northern Germany. Over several centuries, they migrated toward the Middle Danube region. This area is located near modern-day Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary. During this movement, they encountered many different groups and environments.

As they moved south, the Lombards engaged in several significant conflicts. They first came into contact with the Heruls, who were neighbors of the Rugii. The Lombards also fought the Gepids to secure their place in the Danube region. King Audoin defeated the Gepid leader Thurisind around 551 or 552 AD. Later, Audoin's successor, Alboin, destroyed the Gepids in 567 AD.

These victories allowed the Lombards to settle in Pannonia, which is modern-day Hungary. Archaeological finds near Szólád show that Lombard men and women were often buried together as families.

The name "Langobard" has several fascinating explanations in historical texts.

Most scholars believe the name means "long-beards." The 7th-century writer Isidore of Seville noted this common belief. Legendary accounts, such as the *History of the Lombards* by Paul the Deacon, offer a more colorful origin. In one story, the people were originally called the Winnili. During a war, the women tied their hair to their faces to look like beards. When a god saw them at sunrise, he called them the "long-beards."

Other theories suggest the name might relate to a weapon called a *barta*, or an axe.

The most transformative era began with the invasion of Italy in 568 AD.

Italy had been devastated by the long Gothic War between the Byzantine Empire and the Ostrogoths. This conflict had left the peninsula severely depopulated. Alboin led the Lombards into northeastern Italy with almost no opposition. They were joined by various other groups, including Saxons, Heruls, and Bulgars. By 569 AD, they had conquered most of northern Italy. They captured the important city of Pavia in 572 AD.

The Lombard Kingdom established itself in northern and central Italy.

This kingdom reached its peak of power under the 8th-century ruler Liutprand. However, the kingdom's dominance eventually ended in 774 AD. The Frankish king Charlemagne conquered the Lombards and integrated them into the Frankish Empire. Despite this, Lombard influence did not vanish entirely. Noble families continued to rule parts of southern Italy for several more centuries. They remained in control until the Normans conquered them in the 11th century.

The legacy of the Lombards extends into the Middle Ages and beyond.

In southern Italy, their presence was so notable that the Norse people had a specific name for the region. They called it *Langbarðaland*, or the "land of the Lombards." This name was even recorded on Norse runestones. The Lombards serve as a vital link between the ancient Germanic tribes and the medieval kingdoms of Europe. Their story shows how migration and conquest can reshape the identity of entire continents.
