They are best known for conquering much of the Italian Peninsula. This happened between the years 568 and 774 AD. Today, we still see their name in northern Italy. A large region there is called Lombardy. This name comes directly from the people who once lived there. They were a group that moved across many different lands. Their journey took them from the north to the warm south.

Their long journey began far away in northern Europe.

Early records show them living near the Lower Elbe river. Some historians say they were part of a larger group called the Suebi. Later, they moved toward the Danube river area. This region is near modern-day Austria and Hungary. During these moves, they had to face many hard jobs. They fought against other small kingdoms like the Heruls and the Gepids. King Audoin and his successor Alboin were important leaders during these wars.

There are many old stories about how the Lombards got their name.

One legend says they were once called the Winnili. These stories say they were ruled by two brothers named Ibor and Aio. Their mother, Gambara, was a wise advisor to them. One story says they changed their name during a war. In this version, women tied their hair in front of their faces. This made them look like they had long beards. When a god saw them, he called them the "Long-beards." Most scholars believe the name Lombard really does mean "long-beards."

In the year 568, the Lombards began their move into Italy.

They arrived after a long and difficult war called the Gothic War. Much of the land in Italy was empty and broken. The Lombards were joined by many other groups like the Saxons and Bulgars. They moved quickly through the northern parts of the country. By the year 572, they took control of the city of Pavia. They set up a strong kingdom in the north and center. This kingdom reached its most successful time under King Liutprand.

Even though they were powerful, their rule eventually changed. In 774 AD, a Frankish king named Charlemagne conquered the Lombard kingdom. He brought their lands into his own large empire. However, the Lombards did not disappear right away. Some noble families kept ruling parts of southern Italy for a long time. They stayed in power until the Normans arrived in the 11th century. Even the Norse people in the north knew them well. They called the southern lands "Langbarðaland," which means the land of the Lombards.
