They are very important because they helped shape the world we know today. Their name is the root for the word "England," which means "land of the Angles." It is also where we get the word "English" for the people and their language. Most scholars believe they lived on the coast of the Baltic Sea. They likely lived on a small piece of land called the Angeln peninsula.

There are many ideas about why they were called the Angles. One idea is that their name comes from a word for "narrow." This might describe the Schlei estuary near where they lived. Another theory says the name means "hook." This could refer to the shape of the peninsula. Some people think they were called Angles because they were a fishing people.

Even linguists like Julius Pokorny have looked for the meaning in old languages. He suggested the name might come from a word meaning "bend."

We know about the Angles from very old writings. A writer named Tacitus wrote about the "Anglii" around 100 AD. He said they lived in a place that was hard to reach. They lived behind thick woods and large rivers. This made it very difficult for people to attack them. Tacitus also said they worshipped a goddess named Nerthus. She was known as Mother Earth.

Around the fifth century, the Angles moved to Great Britain.

Once they arrived, they split into different groups. They founded several important kingdoms known as the Heptarchy. These included Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia. Northumbria was very strong in the seventh century. Later, Mercia became the more powerful kingdom. In the ninth century, Danish Viking armies attacked these lands. This changed how the Angle people lived and who ruled them.

History also tells us some famous stories about the Angles. One legend involves a leader named Pope Gregory I. He saw Angle children being sold as slaves in a Roman market. He thought they had faces like angels. This story says he wanted to send teachers to their people. This helped bring new ideas to their culture. Today, we still see the name of the Angles in many places. The small peninsula they once called home is still called Angeln.
