Most experts think they lived on the coast of the Baltic Sea. They likely lived on a piece of land called the Angeln peninsula. Some people think their name means "narrow" or "hook." This might describe the shape of the land where they lived.

Over time, these groups changed. The name "England" comes from the Angles. It means "land of the Angles." Their people and language are also called "English."

A famous story tells of a leader named Pope Gregory I. He saw Angle children being sold as slaves. He thought they had faces like angels. This story says he wanted to send teachers to them. This helped bring new ideas to their people.
