Long ago, a huge area of land existed in Northern Europe. We now call this lost world Doggerland

. It sat between Great Britain and the mainland of Europe. This land was a lush and beautiful place. It had many rivers, lakes, and marshes. There were also thick woods and grassy plains. It was a great place for animals to live. People also lived there as hunter-gatherers. This means they found food by hunting and gathering plants.

Doggerland changed as the world grew warmer. During the last Ice Age, much of the area was covered in ice. As that ice melted, the sea levels began to rise. The land slowly turned into a series of low islands. Eventually, the rising water covered the land completely. Some scientists think a giant wave called a tsunami happened too. This wave may have come from a huge underwater landslide

. This event might have flooded the coast very quickly.

People first started to notice clues about this land in the 1800s. In 1931, a fishing boat called the Colinda found something special. It pulled up a piece of peat from the sea floor. Inside the peat was a barbed point made of antler. This was likely a tool for hunting fish

. Later, a researcher named Bryony Coles gave the area the name Doggerland. She named it after the Dogger Bank in the North Sea.

Many interesting things have been found on the seabed. Fishermen have pulled up bones from mammoths and lions. They have even found old stone tools and weapons. In 2019, a flint flake with birch bark tar was found. This helped us learn how very old humans used tools. Scientists also found a hammerstone near Cromer, Norfolk, in 2019. These items come from the Mesolithic period, which was a time of early humans. They help us see how life used to be

.

Today, scientists use amazing technology to study this hidden world. They use computer models and special tools to map the ground. These tools help them see rivers that are now under the sea. One such river is named the Shotton River

. Studying Doggerland is like looking at a giant puzzle. It helps us understand how the Earth changes over time. It also shows us how humans adapted to a changing world.
