They lived near the Rhine River in a place called Germania Inferior. This area was the northern border of the Roman Empire. For many years, the Romans had a lot of influence over these tribes. Some Frankish people even became soldiers in the Roman army. These soldiers could even reach very high ranks in Rome. The name "Frank" first appeared around the 3rd century AD.

As the Roman Empire began to lose control, the Franks grew much stronger. They started to take over large areas that Rome used to rule. In about 406 AD, the Franks tried to defend the Roman borders. This happened when other groups called the Alans and Vandals crossed into the land. Later, a leader named Chlodio began to rule people in the south. This area is where northern France is located today.

Over many centuries, the Frankish people changed in many ways. They became Catholic Christians and learned to speak different languages. In 870, their large realm was split into two separate kingdoms. One part became the Kingdom of France. The other part became the Holy Roman Empire.
