They were one of two main branches of the Gothic people. The other group was known as the Visigoths. Some people think their name meant "Goths of the rising sun."

This name might have been a way to show pride. They lived in areas near the Black Sea and the Danube River. Their culture likely came from the north near the Vistula river.

Life for the Ostrogoths changed as they moved through Europe. In the late 4th century, the Huns arrived in their lands. This made many Goths move toward the Roman Empire. They lived in different groups with their own names. Some were called the Greuthungi.

These groups often moved together or fought alongside others. They even helped the Roman military at times. The Ostrogoths were a smaller group within the large Roman Empire. They spoke a Gothic language that had both spoken and written forms.

A famous leader named Theodoric the Great changed their history. He belonged to a powerful family called the Amals.

In 493, he defeated Odoacer to start a kingdom in Italy. Theodoric ruled from a city called Ravenna. He was backed by the Byzantine emperor Zeno. Theodoric worked to keep Roman laws and culture alive. He used different systems to rule both Goths and Romans. His reign was a time of great power and stability.

After Theodoric died in 526, the kingdom began to struggle. There was a lot of trouble within the ruling family. In 535, Emperor Justinian I started the Gothic War. He wanted to bring the West back under his control.

A Gothic leader named Totila fought back to win land. He was able to regain much of Italy for a while. However, Totila was killed at the Battle of Taginae in 552. The long war was very hard on the people and the land.

The Ostrogothic state finally collapsed by the year 554. Many of the people who survived joined a group called the Lombards. The Lombards started their own kingdom in Italy by 568.
