Totila was a famous king of the Ostrogoths. His real name was Baduila, but many history books call him Totila.

This name might have been used by Roman writers to make him seem less important. He was born in a place called Treviso. He came from a very important family of leaders. His granduncle was a king of the Visigoths. Totila became king in the autumn of 541. He took the throne after two other kings died.

Totila was a very skilled leader in war and politics. He wanted to win back land in Italy for his people. The Eastern Roman Empire had taken much of this land away. To do this, Totila used many smart plans. He moved his army very quickly across the countryside. He often avoided long fights around big, walled cities. Instead, he focused on controlling the open lands and paths. This way, he could stay fast and strong. He even won the support of many common people.

He won several important battles to grow his kingdom. In 542, he led 5,000 men to a victory at Faventia. He also won a big fight in the Mugello valley. After these wins, he captured the city of Naples. By the year 543, he had taken back most of the lost land. He even captured the city of Rome in 546. This happened after a very long siege lasted one year. Totila was a leader who knew how to use his surroundings.

Totila ruled in a way that was different from other leaders. He did not want to ruin the towns he captured. Instead of stealing food and supplies, he collected taxes. This helped him pay for his army without destroying cities. He also gave land to peasants to help them. Some stories say he even freed slaves to join his army. However, some historians think his army was mostly trained riders. He was known to be a very skilled warrior. One writer said he could dance on a horse while catching spears.

The wars in Italy lasted for many years. In 551, the Roman Emperor Justinian sent a large force. This group had 35,000 soldiers from different lands. They met Totila's army at the Battle of Taginae in 552. This battle took place in the Apennines mountains. It was a very hard fight for the Goths. Totila was wounded in this battle and died on July 1, 552. After his death, the Romans eventually took control of the whole country.
