He became the ruler of Italy from 476 to 493 AD. This period is very important in history. Many people believe his rise marked the end of the Western Roman Empire. He was an officer in the Roman army before he took power. He did not just fight; he was also a statesman. A statesman is a person who works in government.

Odoacer rose to power by leading a revolt of different troops. These groups included the Herulian, Rugian, and Scirian soldiers. On 4 September 476, his troops deposed the child emperor Romulus Augustulus. The boy-emperor had been chosen by his father, Orestes, less than a year earlier. After the revolt, Odoacer ruled Italy with a lot of independence. He worked with the Roman Senate to help run the land. He even distributed land to people with very little resistance.

Odoacer's life was full of many different connections. He styled himself as a client of the Eastern emperor Zeno. This meant he recognized Zeno as his superior in Constantinople. Zeno gave him titles like "patrician" to show his status. Odoacer also recognized the leader Julius Nepos. After Nepos was murdered in 480, Odoacer invaded Dalmatia. He took over that region within two years. His reign was mostly stable, even though some soldiers were unhappy in 477.

Historians are not exactly sure about Odoacer's ethnic background.

His name might come from Germanic words meaning "luck" or "vigilant." Some scholars think his name could even be Turkic. He was likely part of the multi-ethnic empire of Attila. This empire included many groups called "Gothic peoples." Sources call him a Scirian, a Rugian, or a Goth. Some even call him a king of the Heruli. He may have had a Gothic mother and a father named Edeco.

Odoacer's rule came to a sudden end in 493. The Eastern emperor Zeno sent Theodoric the Great to invade. Theodoric was an Ostrogoth leader who moved into Italy. By 490, Theodoric had taken most of the land. Odoacer was forced to retreat to the city of Ravenna. On 5 March 493, the city surrendered to Theodoric. The two leaders met at a reconciliation banquet to make peace. However, Theodoric murdered Odoacer at the meal. Theodoric then claimed the throne for himself.
