Julius Nepos was a leader who lived during a very changing time. He is known as a Roman emperor of the West.

Some historians call him the true last emperor of the West. This is because he was the last leader widely recognized in that role. He ruled in Italy from June 24, 474, until August 28, 475. After he lost his power in Italy, he moved back to his home. His home was a province called Dalmatia.

Nepos grew up in a family of important leaders. His father, Nepotianus, was a general who served an emperor. His uncle, Marcellinus, was also a very famous general.

Nepos eventually became the governor of Dalmatia. This was a special job where he had a lot of control. In 473, the eastern emperor Leo I gave Nepos a big task. Leo wanted Nepos to lead an army to Italy. The goal was to remove a leader named Glycerius from power.

In the spring of 474, Nepos sailed toward Italy with his army. He landed at a place called Portus, which was near Rome.

He was very successful and quickly took control. On June 24, 474, he was crowned emperor in the city of Rome. This was a very important moment in history. He was actually the last person to be crowned in Rome for a long time. It took until the year 800 for another leader to be crowned there.

As emperor, Nepos worked hard to make the empire strong again. He tried to fix the authority of the Western Empire. He even made new coins to show his rule in many places.

These coins were found in places like Rome and Mediolanum. He also dealt with groups like the Visigoths and the Burgundians. To keep peace in the land of Gaul, he sent bishops to talk to the Visigoth king, Euric. This peace deal was hard because Nepos had to give up some land. He gave up the Auvergne region to keep the rest of his land safe.

Things became very difficult for Nepos in 475. A man named Orestes led a revolt against him. Because of this, Nepos had to flee Italy and go back to Dalmatia.

Even though he was gone, the Eastern Empire still called him the true emperor. He asked the emperor Zeno for help many times to return to Italy. In 480, two of his own generals, Ovida and Viator, killed him. He died while he was still planning to try and win his empire back.
