Syagrius was a Roman leader who lived a long time ago. He ruled a small piece of land in northern Gaul. This area is in the part of the world we call France today. His land was located between the Somme and the Loire rivers. People often call this area the Kingdom of Soissons.

Syagrius was important because he kept Roman ways alive. He ruled even after the big Western Roman Empire fell apart. He was the last ruler of a Roman state outside of Italy.

Syagrius took over his job from his father, Aegidius. His father was a high-ranking Roman officer. Syagrius began his rule after his father died in 464. He stayed in power for about twenty years. During this time, the last Roman emperors were gone. The empire had ended by the years 476 or 480.

Even without a central government, Syagrius kept his territory working. He managed to hold off groups like the Salian Franks.

History tells us about many different names for Syagrius. A writer named Gregory of Tours called him the King of the Romans. Some historians do not think this title was correct. They say Romans usually did not like having kings. However, other experts believe the title might have been used. They think it could show that people saw him as a Roman leader. This debate helps us understand how people saw power back then.

Things changed when a new Frankish king named Clovis I took power. Clovis became king in 481 after the death of Childeric. Clovis gathered a large army to face Syagrius. They met at the Battle of Soissons in 486. Syagrius lost the battle and had to flee quickly. He ran to a place called Toulouse to find safety.

The Visigoths ruled Toulouse and held Syagrius in prison. They eventually gave him to Clovis, and Syagrius died soon after.

Even though Syagrius lost his land, his family stayed around. His family members lived under Frankish rule for many years. A man named Syagrius went on a trip for a king in 585. A woman named Syagria gave land to monks in 739. The last person in his family known to history was an abbot in 757.
