His empire covered much of Central and Eastern Europe. It included many different groups like the Ostrogoths, Alans, and Gepids. Attila was the nephew of a leader named Rugila. He first shared the throne with his brother, Bleda. They ruled together until Bleda died in 445.

Attila became one of the most feared leaders of his time. He was a major enemy to the Roman Empires in both the East and the West.

Attila's military was very mobile and fast. The Huns were nomads who moved from place to place. They relied on herds for meat and milk.

Their main way of fighting was using horses. They were famous for mounted archery and throwing javelins. This made them very hard to stop in battle. Many people fled from the Huns into Roman lands. This movement of people caused many changes in Europe. The Huns even worked as soldiers for the Romans sometimes. They exchanged ambassadors and even held hostages to keep peace.

Attila led many large invasions during his rule. In 441, he attacked the Eastern Roman Empire. This success made him want to invade the West.

He crossed the Rhine River in 451 to reach Roman Gaul. He marched as far as a place called Aurelianum. However, he was stopped at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. Later, he invaded Italy and hurt the northern provinces. He wanted to take Rome, but he could not do it. He planned more battles, but he died in early 453.

Historians study many different ideas about Attila. They do not know exactly what his name meant. Some scholars think it comes from a Gothic word for "little father."

Other people think it might be a Turkic name. One idea is that it means "the oceanic, universal ruler." Another theory suggests it means "horseman." We also do not know exactly what Attila looked like. Most of our stories come from the people who fought him. A man named Priscus was a diplomat who saw Attila. He is the only person known to have described him.

Attila's life is still talked about in many stories today. After he died, his empire fell apart very quickly. A leader named Ardaric led a revolt against the Huns.

Because the empire broke up, the Huns lost their great power. Even so, Attila became a hero in many old legends. He is a character in famous Germanic poems and sagas. People in Hungary also see him as a part of their history. His story connects the ancient Roman world to the Middle Ages.
