Arcadius was a leader of the Roman Empire.

He lived from 377 until his death in 408. His father was the emperor Theodosius I. On 19 January 383, his father made him a co-ruler. This happened when Arcadius was only five years old. He grew up learning from teachers like Themistius. He also studied with a monk named Arsenius Zonaras.

When Theodosius I died on 17 January 395, the empire split. Arcadius was only 17 years old at that time. He ruled the eastern half of the empire. His brother, Honorius, ruled the western half. Because he was young, many powerful people tried to lead him. A man named Rufinus became a top advisor. Later, a man named Eutropius also gained much power. Arcadius also married Aelia Eudoxia in April 395.

Many hard jobs and fights happened during his reign. In 395, a leader named Alaric I led a Gothic revolt. Alaric marched toward the city of Constantinople. At the same time, a man named Stilicho arrived from the west. Stilicho was the guardian of both brothers. There was much fighting between these leaders for control. Rufinus was killed by the Goths in late 395. This allowed Eutropius and Eudoxia to become the new advisors.

Eutropius stayed in power for about four years. He changed how the empire worked in many ways. He made the office of the postmaster general more important. He also moved the job of making military gear to a new office. In 398, he led a successful campaign against the Huns. However, many people did not like him. They thought it was wrong for a former slave to be a consul. This led to many protests across the empire.

Conflict continued with other groups like the Ostrogoths. They revolted because they wanted Eutropius removed from power. Arcadius eventually sent Eutropius into exile in 399. After that, a leader named Gainas tried to take control. Gainas was a leader of Gothic mercenaries. In the year 400, a large riot broke out in Constantinople. Many Goths were killed during this violent time. Gainas was eventually defeated and killed by Uldin the Hun.
